CHAPTER 10

Roy turned his attention to the approaching rim, where a lone pillar loomed over the giant basin. The structure stood several stories tall and resembled an airspace control tower, complete with an observation deck. The opaque glass gave it a menacing persona, like an evil eye standing watch over its domain.

The shuttle crested the rim and slowed to a stop beside the tower. The doors slid open with a ping of arrival. Werner and Zip stood from their seats and wandered outside without a word. Roy stayed put, partly out of fear, partly out of confusion. The decorum he knew no longer applied, so he awaited basic instructions like a nerdy kid at summer camp.

Zip moseyed towards an entry door at the base of the tower.

Werner paused and turned back to the shuttle port. “This way, mister plumber.”

Roy took a deep breath, then rose to his feet and exited the shuttle. He passed through the oval port and stepped down to a concrete platform that surrounded the tower. Several palm trees lined the perimeter with green fronds rustling in the wind. Roy lifted his gaze to the bright blue sky. Or rather, the dome’s projection of a bright blue sky. A handful of white clouds roamed the space, blotting the artificial sun from time to time. Roy could feel the heat on his skin, leaving him to wonder if the dome emitted radiation. Definitely a question for another time, he wisely thought to himself.

“Is this actual UV?” Roy said.

Werner cocked an eyebrow. That’s your most burning question? he conveyed without saying a word. He turned towards the tower and resumed his approach.

Roy swallowed the scorn and followed.

A short trek later, the group reassembled outside the tower entrance. Zip stood in front of a drab gray door with his arms crossed. Werner paused alongside and turned to Roy, who took his final steps.

“Understand, mister plumber. What you are about to do cannot be undone. Your actions from this point on are a pledge of confidence. Should you violate that confidence, your life, as well as the lives you cherish, is forfeit.”

Roy gulped. “Understood.”

“Good. Then let’s unclog this toilet.”

Zip grabbed the handle and yanked it upwards. The door clanked like a bank vault, then swung open with a slow whine. Werner floated into the tower base, a drab receiving area that housed an elevator shaft and little else. He summoned the lift as Roy shuffled into the dim room with arms pinned to his side. The trapped air was thick with humidity, no doubt from baking in the sun all day. Zip followed him inside and latched the door shut, turning the dim sauna into a dark coffin. The elevator pinged soon after and a door slid open, revealing a cramped car that two people would find uncomfortable.

Werner stepped inside, spun around, and pressed his back to the rear wall. Roy followed him in and filled much of the remaining area, careful to avoid Werner’s personal space. Zip pushed his way inside and crammed Roy into a corner, dropping any pretense of civility.
